A photo a day – Beckenham Recreation Ground

This photo is of the bandstand in Beckenham Recreation ground. I don’t think I’ve been in this park in 20 years, even though its not very far from me, but as a young teenager it was a regular haunt.

The photo brought lots of things to mind:

  • Social and personal history: David Bowie played on this bandstand in 1969 Link.
  • Daily life: the shot was taken in the early afternoon and I was surprised to find the park so empty when stepping outside of its gates life was teaming all around.
  • Beauty: just how pretty and serene the whole scene was.

When first learning photography I was encouraged to think about framing photos like this more dynamically by positioning the bandstand to one side of the frame. I chose not to here because the scene is one of stillness – so dynamic framing would counter that connotation.

I think on review I should have moved slightly left and lined up the stairs exactly square to me, but I am too tired to go back and reshoot it.
