A photo a day – pain

Mum’s Cancer got worse last night and so she was admitted to hospital today. It’s the pain that is a problem. When I arrived she was in A&E, her eyes were closed as she tried to manage. Luckily, by the time I left at five o’clock she was on a ward and feeling very very tired but in less pain because staff had given her medicine.

I debated whether or not to shoot and or show a photo where mum was not present within the frame and my first selection showed her partially. However you need to see the lines on mums forehead, her eyes closed in concentration and the needle in her arm to know both something of her and her situation in addition to the setting.

For me the photo shows the mum I know and love. She doesn’t need to be dressed up or perform for the lens and this photo shows her dignity and beauty without shying away from the shitty reality of her life at the moment the shutter clicked.

Pete this is a very strong image, I feel your mother’s determination, you were right to include her.
I hope she feels a bit better tomorrow.
