A photo a day – The “Alex”

On my to and from Dad’s I keep finding lots of places I have not seen or thought about since my youth. This is one of them. When I was about 15 or 16 I used to frequent this pub for a while. They had a disco of sorts in the function room above the bar. The “Alex” closed its doors for the last time earlier this year and like so may pubs in Penge and Beckenham, looks like it will be converted into flats.

I spent 2 minutes thinking about the pubs I knew as a youth that have now closed their doors. There are a lot of them: The Dew Drop Inn, the Lord Palmerston, the Queen Adelaide, the Railway, the Robin Hood, the Royal Oak, the Thicket, the Clock House, the Elmer Lodge, the Three Tuns, the Rising Sun. I think that pubs as we know them are fast becoming a thing of the past.
