I’ve been incrementally ordering little things for Karen’s Christmas and birthday presents. Her birthday is only four days after Christmas and so it’s always too easy to overlook the need to mark it separately. So far I have two books, a scarf, some sweets and a pretty little pen. So I just need to buy some perfume and Export larger and she will be set.
The question was how to represent the stuff here. Should I shoot with a narrow or deep depth of field?
In the end I chose a representation that uses a deep depth of field and so could be described as “straight”. But the reality is it was still a manufactured image with a backdrop of placement of subject matter tested and considered in some depth.
There are many photographers who prefer straight imagery but I am not one of them. There seems to me to be a place for every style, approach and technique as these things help us understand what the photographer is trying to say visually. Accordingly to exclude an approach is rather like restricting words used in a vocabulary.
