Project 10: Review and conclusions

itten symbols 2-Edit-Edit

Thoughts
I thought I had come to the end of the road with these symbols but I wanted to try one or two more things and so placed my personal symbol taken and adapted from a photographic index of me into the colour context I was working on. It looks sad and more personal where the dynamic symbol looks aspirational and general. But still lacked something and so moved the personal symbol so that it was breaking away from the homogenous group.

My Fealings (1 of 3)

I think I have got more out of symbols than any other project but need to move on now. Other images – particularly the repeating patterns – have given me some thoughts about products and production values and lend themselves to products like wallpaper or carpets. This idea is partly from thinking about the work of Chuck Close (see here) with things seen and unseen depending on proximity.

There are no final images here – all of these experiments could play a role in my final works so I think I will leave the issue here, place a few of the better examples on my website, and return to it when I have decided what my final work shall look like – physically or virtually.

But it’s not finished by a long way – next project will be about symbols in context – signs.
