By 1916 Granddad Dunbar had been in the Royal Scots for 20 years and was their Pipe Major. He’d seen service in the two Boar Wars (Cape Colony) and Belfast and spent most of the First World War in France (from August 10th 1914 until April 4th 1919 with just one 5 month break at the end of 1914 and the beginning of 1915.)

This photo was taken in 1916 in Moulle in northern France on a little box camera and looked like below this in its original form.
