Granddad is 83 years old here. Nan in 68, Jim is 9, Steve 7 and I am just over two and a half. I don’t ever remember seeing granddad up and about. A colleague suggested I should scan the pages so as not to lose the handwriting and it’s a good idea. Thanks for the suggestion Simon.
My memory is of mum dropping us off at Ravenscroft Road every Saturday morning so she could do the weekly shop (she worked in the week) and the first thing we used to do is go upstairs into the back bedroom and see granddad in bed. He’d point to the sweet tin and we’d come around to his side of the bed and take a sweet each. He had an alarm clock with a black face and green luminous dials by his bed.
Today is the centenary of the battle of the Somme. Granddad was present. I wonder if his job was to pipe the lads “over the top”?
